📍 Location & Counters (助数詞): Review
This review guide covers how to describe where things/people are, and how to count different types of objects and animals based on your worksheet.
1. Describing Locations & Existence
When describing where something is, pay close attention to the particles に (ni), が (ga), and も (mo), as well as the verbs あります (arimasu - for inanimate objects) and います (imasu - for people and animals).
Core Grammar Patterns:
[ Place ] の [ Position ] に [ Item/Person ] が あります / います。
(There is [Item/Person] at the [Position] of [Place].)
Examples from the worksheet:
こうばんの となりに えきが あります。
(There is a train station next to the police box.)
うちの となりに コンビニが あります。
(There is a convenience store next to my house.)
うちの となりに ウェイドさんが います。
(Mr./Ms. Wade is next to my house.)
つくえの うえに ノートが ２さつ あります。
(There are 2 notebooks on the desk.)
💡 Vocabulary Note:
こうばん (Kōban) = Police box
けいさつしょ (Keisatsusho) = Police Department
けいさつかん (Keisatsukan) = Police officer
となり (Tonari) = Next to / Beside
うえ (Ue) = On / Above
2. Master the Counters (助数詞 - Joshūshi)
In Japanese, we use different "counter words" depending on the shape and type of the object. Notice how the pronunciation changes (sound changings) for numbers like 1, 3, 6, 8, and 10!

3. Word Order Check: Where does the counter go?
In Japanese, the counter usually goes after the particle (が/を) and right before the verb.
Pattern: [ Item ] が [ Counter ] あります / います。
Correct: ノート が ２さつ あります。 (Notebook が 2 satsu arimasu.)
Incorrect: ２さつ ノート が あります。 (Sounds unnatural in standard contexts)
