👋 Intro Lesson: Self-Introduction, Greetings, Numbers & Homework Review
This review covers fundamental greetings, self-introductions, classroom Japanese, number tricks, and your Hiragana homework!
1. Self-Introduction (はじめまして)
Follow this 5-step flow when introducing yourself in Japanese:
Step 1: First Greeting
・はじめまして。 (Hajimemashite.) = How do you do? / Nice to meet you.
Step 2: Name
・わたしは [ Name ] です。 (Watashi wa [ Name ] desu.) = I am [ Name ].
* Example: わたしは ジェーンです。 (I am Jane.)
Step 3: Nationality
Attach 〜じん (~jin) to a country name:
・[ Country ] じんです。 ([ Country ] jin desu.) = I am [ Nationality ].
* アメリカじん です。 (I am American.)
* にほんじん です。 (I am Japanese.)
Step 4: Occupation / Job (しごと)
・わたしは [ Occupation ] です。
* かいしゃいん (Kaishain) = Office / Company worker
* せんせい (Sensei) = Teacher
* いしゃ (Isha) = Doctor
* がくせい (Gakusei) = Student
* くるまの せいびし = Auto mechanic
Step 5: Closing
・よろしく おねがいします。 (Yoroshiku onegai shimasu.) = Nice to meet you.
2. Everyday Greetings (あいさつ)
・おはよう ございます。 (Ohayou gozaimasu.) = Good morning.
・こんにちは。 (Konnichiwa.) = Good afternoon.
・こんばんは。 (Konbanwa.) = Good evening.
・おやすみなさい。 (Oyasuminasai.) = Good night. (Casual: おやすみ〜)
・さようなら。 (Sayounara.) = Goodbye.
・ありがとう ございます。 (Arigatou gozaimasu.) = Thank you very much.
・すみません / ごめんなさい。 (Sumimasen / Gomennasai.) = Excuse me / I'm sorry.
・いいですね。 (Iidesu ne.) = Sounds good! / Nice!
3. Useful Classroom Expressions (レッスンで つかう ことば)
💡 Instructions from Teacher:
・いって ください。 (Itte kudasai.) = Please say (it).
・みて ください。 (Mite kudasai.) = Please look.
・きいて ください。 (Kiite kudasai.) = Please listen.
・よんで ください。 (Yonde kudasai.) = Please read.
* Example: すうじ よんで ください。 (Please read the numbers.)
💡 Expressing Understanding:
・Q: わかりますか。 (Wakarimasu ka?) = Do you understand?
* A (Yes): はい、わかります。 (Hai, wakarimasu.) = Yes, I understand.
* Example: すうじ わかります！ (I understand numbers!)
* A (No): いいえ、わかりません。 (Iie, wakarimasen.) = No, I don't understand.
4. Japanese Numbers (すうじ) & Sound Tricks
* すうじ かんぺき！ (Numbers were perfect!)
0: rei / zero -> Sounds like "lay"
1: ichi -> Sounds like "itchy"
2: ni -> Sounds like "knee" 🦵
3: san -> Sounds like "sun" ☀️

It was so great to have a lesson again after two weeks! And I can't believe we both injured our big toes! I laughed so hard at that!!

The Japanese word "Sayounara" (さようなら) is often translated simply as "goodbye," but its etymology reveals a much deeper philosophy. It originates from the historical phrase "sayou naraba," which literally translates to "if it is so" or "if that is the way it must be."
Rather than a casual farewell, sayounara carries a profound sense of acceptance. It acknowledges the natural flow of time and destiny. It implies that if circumstances dictate we must part, we accept this reality with grace and a quiet understanding of life's transience.
