Today, we practiced reading hiragana. I was very surprised because you were able to read it very well. Your pronunciation of the small “tsu” was also very natural and clear.
We also looked at how to write your name in katakana together. After that, we studied a little bit of grammar. We learned several verbs, such as benkyou shimasu (to study), ryouri shimasu (to cook), souji shimasu (to clean), and undou shimasu (to exercise). You also already knew the verb tsukurimasu (to make), which was great.
From now on, let’s use more verbs and practice talking about many different things in Japanese. Great work today!

Thank you for coming to the lesson.
We returned to the textbook for the first time in a while. As preparation for learning the sentence pattern “~shinakereba narimasen,” we reviewed the rules for changing verbs from the -masu form into the “~shinakereba…” form. After that, you practiced completing sentences by adding “~shinakereba narimasen” in response to a given reason. (Example: “Because the traffic light is red” → “Because the traffic light is red, you must stop.”)

In Japanese, people often add “-san” or “-no hito” (person) after a job or role name when talking about someone’s work.
1. “~san”
“~san” shows politeness or friendliness toward the person.
ekiin-san (station staff) tenin-san (store clerk) untenshu-san (driver)
Using “~san” sounds softer and more natural than saying only the job title.
This is especially common for people who provide a service.
Image / nuance tenin = store clerk (job title only, a little formal/cold) tenin-san = polite / friendly
Children also use this pattern a lot:
pan-ya-san (bakery worker / baker) ohana-ya-san (florist) omawari-san (police officer) 2. “~no hito” (“person from ~”)
When the exact job title is unknown, or when speaking more generally, Japanese often uses “~no hito.”
omise no hito (person working at the store) kaisha no hito (person from the company) keisatsu no hito (person from the police) kakari no hito (staff person / person in charge)
The meaning is similar to:
“the person who works there”
This expression is very useful and easy for beginners to use.
3. Which one should you use? “~san”
→ when there is a clear job title or role
tenin-san untenshu-san “~no hito”
→ when the title is unknown or you want to speak more generally
omise no hito eki no hito Important point
In Japanese, people often call others by their role or position instead of using “you.”
For example:
tenin-san sensei okyaku-san
This is one characteristic of Japanese communication style.
